Debit Order* – Banking Fee: R8.50 per debit order per month. Renewal Service Fee: R220.00 per vehicle per annum. Licence Renewal Cost: Subject to vehicle weight and province in which the vehicle is registered.

KZN Licence Plate Questions
- The province is currently running out of licence numbers
- The current licence marks are historically outdated in terms of the registering authority boundaries, these includes number plate such as NPS- Port Shepstone, NRB-Richards Bay-NPN-Pinetown. ND - Durban and NP-Pietermaritzburg
- The new licence numbering system aligns with other provinces and will allow for 15 200 000 licence numbers. On average KZN registers +-60 000 vehicles annually, which will allow the department to print numbers for over 70 years.
The new numbering plate system will be implemented as follows:
1ST DECEMBER 2023 - 28 FEBRUARY 2024:
- Will cater for registration of new motor vehicles including government vehicles
- All re-registration of vehicles to new owners; and
- Stolen vehicles that are recovered and re-licenced onto the owner's name
1st March 2024:
- Will be open to all vehicles owners to migrate to new system
- By l st November 2025 it will be mandatory for all vehicles owners to have migrated to the new numbering system. Should motor vehicle owners not comply within the 24 month period, the said motor vehicles will be automatically issued with a new number plate upon licensing of their vehicles.
No, the new system does not cater for this. Only Personalised Licence Numbers up to and including seven character will be sold.
No, this is system generated. However, you can opt to purchase a Personalised Licence Number.
Where do I get the new-look number plate?
EasyRenew can assist at a cost of R402.50 per set. Existing Personalised Licence Plates will cost R460.00 per set to convert to the new system.
Our suggestion is that you change your Licence Number at your next renewal. You will need to create a unique login and then register an owner profile and add the vehicle details. We will send you an email containing the amount due and a reminder to apply for a new Licence number, approximately 40 days before the expiry date.
Affected customers will have an option to change to a Personalised Licence Number of their choice, eg. ND123, can change to ND123ZN.

- The colour will no longer be green on white, but will be blue on white
- The number of characters for a Personalised Licence Numbers in the new format will revert to a maximum of seven characters
