The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport is confident about the state of readiness for the rollout of the new vehicle licence numbering system for the province, which commenced on 1st December 2023.
Current plates in the province have a host of codes indicating where they were registered – such as ND for Durban, PMB for Pietermaritzburg, NPN for Pinetown, etc. However, vehicles with these respective codes aren’t necessarily kept in those areas.
The department said in the new system, the number plates will not depict the towns and demarcation, but will instead have a continuous numbering system, and all registration numbers issued in the province will be depicted as “ZN”.
With effect 1st December 2024, KZN transport has decided that on renewal of your vehicle licence that they will automatically convert your current licence number to the new numbering system. This means that you will need to buy a set of new licence plates.

Our suggestion is that you change your Licence Number at the time of your next renewal. You will need to create a unique login and then register an owner profile and add the vehicle details. We will send you an email containing the amount due and a reminder to apply for a new Licence number, approximately 40 days before the expiry date.
